Car Hire Excess Insurance
No hard sell on extra insurance at desk, seemed a good inclusive deal I had via Expedia with no excess.

The car hire company was ok. We had to wheel our luggage accross the carpark at the airport to reach the office. The first car they gave us had a huge dent in the passenger side wing (we felt this was an odd thing for them to offer us), we refused this car and asked for another, which they gave us. The car was good and nippy (it’s best to have a smaller car in some parts of Ireland as the roads can be narrow in many places). A shuttle bus was available to take us to the terminal once we dropped off the car. A good experience overall.

Thrifty claimed that we had scuffed the underside of the bumper of the car i.e. under the car. The scuffs were not visible unless you got down on the ground and looked underneath the front bumper, which, regrettably, we did not do on pick up as I am confident they pull this on everyone. We did however, on pick-up, point out a big scratch on the side of the car (which they had told us was completely undamaged) which they said was just wear and tear. They charged us £60 for the "bumper damage" despite us thoroughly disputing the charge - they just stole it from our deposit and said it didn't matter as we had insurance to cover it so we shouldn't be bothered. Completely outrageous attitude. This was our first and definitely last time using Thrifty.

The wait to collect the car was excessive as there was insufficient staff at the desk. The car was okay and the service on return was fine.

Thrifty is the worst rental company I have ever used. Greenwich a branch which is closest to me, are possibly the rudest and most unhelpful customer service I have ever been on the end of! After making a complaint to the head office I was give a messily £12! Name and shame is the only way to show this company up for what it is. Complaint was dealt with by Misbah Abid Customer Service Supervisor Thrifty Car and Van Rental Stay away at all costs and go for one of the more well known rental companies!

Desk in the airport was quick and efficient. Collected car from parking, which is a reasonable distance away, but there didn’t really seem to be any staff at the collection point to check the car over with. Fortunately the car was brand new, so there was no existing damage. Return procedure was quick and easy.

Staff member at reception was cheerful and helpful. Vehicle was just the job and had no problems. Counter staff on return to Darlington branch where just as cheerful. Will use again and I have no problem recommending to others.

Good cars - sub-bar service. The Thrifty rental in Brighton - right next to the railway station - does offer a good selection of new cars (2019 Ford Focus's and Land Rover Discovery Sports's for example), but their service leaves much to be desired. I've rented from them a couple of times and there's always some kind of a problem... The last time they gave me a car that hadn't been cleaned yet - not from inside, not from outside. To be fair they did offer they're gonna clean it right now, but as I had already waited for a while to actually get the car and was in a hurry, that was no longer an option. In addition when we were looking the car over (a brand new Focus with less than 1000 miles on the clock), I pointed out some curb damage and although the lady did make a note of it, she forgot to add it to the record, which - dumb and trusting as I am - stupidly signed. When I returned the car they accused my off curbing that wheel and refused to get in touch with the lady who looked the car over with me, because "it's her day off". Luckily she had mailed me the photo off the curbed wheel the day before, so we sort of got in cleared. I say "sort of", cause I'm still waiting for them to return my surprisingly high deposit of 500 pounds. And it was really embarrassing to be accused of ruining their brand new vehicle in front of all other customers. It absolutely ruined my Sunday. And they didn't call me back when the situation was cleared on their end. I called them, when I found the photo of the curbed wheel in my mailbox. * Then * they told me that yes, this is cleared. Sorry. That was it. Left a bad taste in my mouth. And then there's their ridiculous and vague fuel policy. Even though my booking said "full to full" under fuel policy, I was handed a car with like 70% of fuel in the tank and told to bring it back with the same amount. It's very hard to fuel a car to some exact vague amount. Especially as it takes a bit for the fuel gauge to catch up when you're fueling. Some times you even have to drive a bit for the gauge to show the correct amount. So it's needlessly difficult to do without doing math, which requires you to know the average fuel consumption of the vehicle and the distance traveled... it's all very frustrating and of course I ended up accidentally filling the tank to brim again. Congratulations, Thrifty! All in all, if at all possible I prefer other rental companies. But thrifty does offer return options on Sunday, so if you only need the car for Saturday you don't have to pay for the full weekend. That's definitely a plus. Personally I suggest going with Enterprise, whose customers service is wonderful, fuel policy doesn't involve brain gymnastics and the cars are always clean.

Very poor customer care. They gave me a car with a puncture that you couldn't see when the car picked up but shown straight after I drove away. They said I should have picked it up when takingthe car - and charged me excess!!! Outrages!!

Take your own pictures of everything before and after, and if you're referred to them via an insurance company, lean on the insurance company for complaints. I would also recommend that you insist someone meets you when you're handing the car back, rather than risking receiving a call a day later. I don't recommend at all, I don't want to put all my personal details on here, but after reading the TrustPilot reviews, we felt certain they'd try something funny, and we weren't wrong. Very poor experience altogether.

Good price and service. Booked an "Premium Estate vehicle" on the basis of web site saying it fitted 3 large cases and 3 hand luggage - when arrived they said our 3 "large" cases where bigger than normal which surprised me as .they are normal "suitcase" for airline travel - in any event they upgraded us to larger car for no additional price.

The online Thrifty price quoted was not respected at the desk when arriving in Dublin. CDW and Theft insurance were added which more than doubled the rental cost. Our past experience was that these are included in the basic hire charge.

I have used enterprise in the past, do not be fooled by the American customer service nonsense. Thrifty was head and shoulders above on that score. I was looked after by one person, he was an extremely professional, personable, affable chap who did the job with no hassle. Thrifty were also half the price of the so called big rental firms, I will use them again.

Very poor service. The airport desk was confused about our booking and we were sent to the Thrifty depot. The officer at the depot was very pleasant, but when asked to change our booking to an automatic from a manual, said he could provide us with a car but did not explain the huge difference in cost ie nearly 150% more. The car we got was terrible as it’s tyres were illegal and it also made a weird noise. We were in a rush so could not stop to complain, but when we complained on our return, the person checking the return showed a complete lack of concern. We note that Thrifty at Shannon has the worst reputation of the companies at the airport. We have resolved never to use them again.
